1992 – World Cup

In 1991 Raí also won the Brazilian League with the ‘Tricolor’ (Three Colours; the nickname reflecting the club’s white, red and black kit) with crack players like Zetti, Cafú, Antônio Carlos, Muller, Toninho Cerezo amongst others. The following year SPFC began a winning streak without precedents in the club. The beginning of an illustrious haul was the club’s first ever Libertadores Cup. Then the team won their pioneering Intercontinental Cup. This title was earned in a memorable final against FC Barcelona with a free kick that had been rehearsed thousands of times. Many say 1992 was the year of Raí’s consecration as a footballing icon.
